What are the new red stickers on USACE property signs?

In the current phase of the cleanup and recovery effort under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), residential properties in Lahaina have been marked with a property sign that looks like the sign on the left.

As the stability of structures in the affected area degrades, a small number of residential properties have been recently deemed unsafe to enter. Hoʻōla Maui work crews, under prime contractor DAWSON, have placed red stickers on these property signs of those properties to call attention to the critical safety hazard. The red stickers on the property signs are shown on the sign on the right.

For properties with critical safety hazards, site assessment work will be partially deferred until field crews address the safety hazard – for example, knocking down the unstable wall. From there, crews will conduct an additional site assessment if required before continuing with debris removal for that property.

Regardless of the property status (fully- or partially-deferred, or not deferred at all), homeowners are able to get access passes through the County of Maui’s re-entry program, when the zone for their property opens up. When on site, homeowners will be accompanied by safety officers who can advise them on the risks on their properties. Those safety officers will help homeowners make informed decisions about whether or how to enter their properties.  For more information, visit www.mauirecovers.org/reentry.
